Saskatchewan children lacking in care for lung diseases

Saskatchewan children lacking in care for lung diseases - Monday, June 15, 2009

An external report on pediatric respiratory medicine released today shows that lung specialist care for Saskatchewan children lags far behind national standards. In spite of the fact that lung problems are the most common reason for hospitalisation of children, Saskatchewan has only one children’s lung specialist. Less than half of his time is allocated for treating lung diseases – and he is currently on leave.
According to the report, in order to adequately care for the lung health needs of a province our size, Saskatchewan should have three children’s lung specialists. Non-specialists who are, of necessity, coping with complex pediatric respiratory cases do not have access to optimal techniques, training or consultation for such cases. There is growing acknowledgement that the current situation is untenable.
