Prince Albert Parkland Health Region Respiratory Services

The Respiratory Therapy department is located in the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. It is staffed by four full time therapists, Barb Hewitt as Senior Therapist, Marvin Nicolas, Bridgette Lang and Nicole Garden, and one casual RT, Val Borsos. On-site coverage is provided 7 days a week, with on-call coverage available the rest of the time.

Critical care support is provided to all areas of the hospital. Our intensive care unit has 8 beds, with the capability to ventilate up to 4 patients at a time. Ventilators used are the Evita4, EvitaXL, PB 7200 and LTV 1000. Stats from 2008-09 show 98 ventilator patients, 591 ventilator days, with 40 transfers of intubated adult patients to other acute care facilities.

The maternity department delivers over 1500 babies annually, many of them high risk. The EvitaXL and Sipap units are dedicated to this unit to help manage these neonates, with 28 ventilated/ SiPAPed patients last year.

The outpatient services provided include full pulmonary function testing, home oxygen assessments and overnight oximetry for sleep apnea evaluation. Stats from 2008-09 show 500 full pulmonary function tests and over 300 overnight oximetry tests performed.

The department also provides respiratory services to Shellbrook Hospital once per month, including spirometry, home oxygen assessments and inpatient care.
